Pigs in a Blanket from Scratch

Like most of you, I've always made pigs in a blanket using canned crescent rolls and cocktail sausages. However, it takes 3-4 cans of crescent rolls make enough for this crew and the price has really gone up!

So....I started looking up some recipes that might make a good substitute (other than making actual crescent rolls...which are delicious!)  I wanted something buttery (of course), but didn't require any rise time either. I found a few options and came up with a recipe that was somewhat of a mix of the ones I read online.

My helper followed the directions and made some delicious pigs in a blanket! We had exactly the same number of sausages as slots in my new pan, so we used that to make some bee and beehive pigs! The pan is perfect for pull apart breads, but was cute for this too! You can easily cook these on a lined baking sheet or in a round pan as well.

One of the cutest cooking helpers I know!

This dough makes enough to wrap 20-30 sausages, depending on how thin you roll the dough and how much dough you want to use per "pig."

Pigs in a Blanket
- cocktail sausages (20-30)
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon sugar or honey
- 1/2 cup buttermilk (or regular milk will work as well)
- 1/2 cup melted butter (Yes, an entire stick! You can decrease this down to 1/4 or 1/3 cup if you like, but I was wanting a buttery dough!)

*Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
*Pat cocktail sausages dry with a napkin and use a fork to poke holes in them so they don't make the dough soggy while baking.
*In a medium bowl, whisk together your dry ingredients, then stir in wet ingredients until the dough begins to come together.
*On a floured surface, knead your dough for 5-10 minutes, then sprinkle a little flour on top and roll out to a rectangle with a floured rolling pin.
*Cut to 1/2" thick (give or take) and wrap one around a sausage and place on the pan.
*Bake for 20 minutes, then try not to eat them all at once!
